LUNAR NEW YEAR AT THE DAVIS THEATER
In celebration of the Lunar New Year, we will be shedding our snake skins and looking forward to the Year of the Horse! We will be serving up a buffet of dishes from our pals at Lao Peng You, as well as showcasing the greatest Hong Kong film about food and cooking competitions, in a brand-new 4K remaster no-less!
Long considered one of the absolute cinematic geniuses of Hong Kong cinema, director Tsui Hark delivers a culinary tour de force: equal parts food porn, action filmmaking, and rom-com, all tossed together in Hark’s inimitable style. Triad member Sun (Leslie Cheung) decides to give up his underworld lifestyle to pursue life as a chef. Seeking apprenticeship at a local restaurant and the guidance of a legendary drunken master chef, he will have to do battle with a rival cooking school, in an epic battle of culinary technique. Along with his restaurant’s quirky heiress, Sun will ignite romantic sparks and stove tops, taking part in one of the most thrilling culinary competitions ever put to screen! It’s Hong Kong wuxia action meets an explosion of technique and delicious dishes, the kind primed to blow Gordon Ramsay’s perfectly quaffed mop right off his blimey dome.
As part of the event’s VIP package, ticket holders will get to feast on dishes being prepared by our friends over at Lao Peng You! The dishes will include dan-dan noodles with ground pork, cucumber salad, and pork/green onion dumplings – along with one bottle of TsingTao lager beer or a Lychee martini for each person. Space is limited for the VIP package, so don’t wait!
Regular ticket holders will have access to the movie, discounted cocktails and beer, as well as a chance to try a bag of popcorn featuring Lao Peng You’s signature 5-spice blend on top!
Symbolizing new beginnings, adventure, drive, vitality, and energy, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse, than with delicious, comforting food and blazing, spirited filmmaking. Here’s to a better year and a better world.

“One-of-a-kind … Tsui turns [each scene] into a fiery display of superhuman speed and dexterity, exhibiting on his side of the camera the same flamboyant mastery that the chefs show on the other.” Hal Hinson, The Washington Post
“Lively, endlessly inventive … What Shanghai Blues does for popular music, what Peking Opera Blues does for opera, what Once Upon a Time in China does for herbal medicine and the lion dance, this movie does for Chinese cuisine.” David Bordwell, Planet Hong Kong
