In 2022, at a small public lecture in a bucolic town in New York State, world-renown author Salman Rushdie was viciously attacked by a man wielding a knife. His first thought: “So it’s you.” It had been 33 years since Iran’s Supreme Leader ordered Rushdie to be executed for blasphemy for his acclaimed book The Satanic Verses. After several death threats against his life over the decades, Rushdie had finally, it appears, met his fate.
